Dental injuries - Knocked out (Avulsed) tooth
When a tooth is completely knocked out, it is referred to as an avulsed tooth.
If you are able to find the tooth, then try to handle it by the crown of the tooth, and not to touch the root.
If the tooth is dirty, then you may rinse it with milk, but do not scrub it clean.
You must then keep the tooth moist. This can be best done by keeping the tooth tucked under the cheek and gums. However, this is not recommended for children to do, as there is a chance they may inhale or swallow the tooth. In such cases, the tooth could be kept in milk.
You must contact your dentist immediately and tell them what has happened.
Knocked out teeth can sometimes be put back into the socket and saved. Putting the tooth back is more successful when the tooth is put back in within 30 – 60 minutes of the accident.
It is advisable to speak to a dentist before attempting to put an avulsed tooth back into its own socket.
