Dental injuries - Fractured tooth

Teeth normally break or fracture because of trauma, decay, or inherent weakness of the tooth from previous fillings.

Fractured or broken teeth can cause a lot of discomfort or no discomfort at all. It is wise to avoid biting on the broken tooth until you are able to see a dentist.

If possible, the broken portion of the tooth could be kept in milk or water and shown to the emergency dentist. This portion could be useful especially if you have broken a front tooth.

The treatment depends on the severity of the fracture. Often it may just require ‘smoothing off’, while with more severe fractures, more complex treatment would be necessary.
